It’s been over a year but I am, at long last, posting the final video of our journey to the world’s longest yard sale.  It gives an overall view of the sale along with interviews with a few of the vendors we met along the way.

Tuna for Lunch?
Thrifty Sisty Fiance Roy spotted this fun crafting idea on Lifehacker. It teaches you to use old tuna fish cans to make a sporty “Tiffin Box”. (I had to look that one up. According to Design Within Reach “The term “tiffin” is used in parts of Britain and India to mean a light meal or snack. In some areas, the word specifically refers to lunches brought to work or...

During our thrifty journey this summer, we took a planned side trip to Unclaimed Baggage and it was pretty awesome. If you don’t know about this crazy place, check out our post about it from last November (almost exactly a year ago…weird).

Paper Pumpkins
We’re Holiday driven driven here at Thrifty Sisty (kind of ironic since I live in a country with totally different holidays from the ones I choose to write about) and that means out with Halloween and in with Thanksgiving! For those who can’t let go so easily, here is a fun transitional craft that I found on Etsy’s blog, Storque.                               You can...

Vintage Halloween Decorations Using Old Books
For super creepy Victorian inspired Halloween Decorations use old books. Old field guides and anatomy books are full of spooky Halloweeny (he he) drawings.                        You can cut the images out of the book directly or photocopy them for a faded black and white effect. Use them to decorate around the house or make unique cards and party invitations.                                  ...

Don't throw that away, it's my Halloween costume!
The wings of this bat costume are made from recycled umbrellas. If you buy the black clothing second hand (or use your own old clothing) the whole costume will be recycled, and thrifty of course. The costume was part of the Trash to Craft Challenge.

Thrifty Sirens
Excellent Thrifty Halloween Costumes… At a recent event (theme: “Under the Sea”) I spotted these young ladies dressed to kill as the Odyssey’s Sirens. Upon further investigation I learned that not only were these costumes beautiful but they were also very thrifty! I interviewed the chief architect of the “look” (pictured at center) and she passed along the...

We come from a long line of thrifters. Take a look at our dad’s “can’t miss scheme” for making some extra cash. Note his Salvation Army cardigan, a gift from the Sisties.

Thrifty Sisty of the Month...
Jamie Chase of Amesbury Massachusetts. In February, the Boston Globe wrote an article about this inspirational woman. Through coupon clipping, (extensive, strategic coupon clipping) she saves her family up to 90 per cent weekly on things like food, clothing and toiletries. Sometimes, she even makes money. Once, instead of having to pay $400, she got paid $60! An excellent role model for us all. ...

Haircut and New Boots...At The Same Time
Once, years ago, Anna and I were walking along Main St. in Gloucester when we heard a peculiar screeching noise. I was convinced, since we were so close to the harbor, that we were hearing seagulls. It being summer, Anna thought the noise was coming from a group of children playing nearby. As we rounded the corner by the old Mystery Train, we clearly saw that we were both right. In front of us was...
